[Class 9 (ii)] Relates to hand-held pyrotechnic signal devices of the kind comprising an air-jacketed container for the signal stars and ignition means. To ensure tight sealing of the container 3 and to prevent removal of the cap 8 thereof by rough operation of the ignition device 17, 18, 19, the rim 10 of the cap is jammed between the wall of the container and the inturned end 7 of the outer jacket 1. A resilient gasket 24 is compressed over the joint by a removable cover 23. The container 3 has a heat-insulating coating 3a of paper or asbestos. As a further safeguard against premature displacement of the cap 8, a tapered cork plug 11 is passed over the igniter tube 9 and is forced into the mouth of the container by the cap during assembly. The joints may be sealed with shellac. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the rim 10 of the cap is flared at 10a and the inturned mouth 7a of the jacket 1 is slightly tapered so that the flared part may be forced below the inturned end to form a spring lock. Alternatively, pimples may be formed in the rim 10 below the jacket flange 7. Other modifications are also described. To ensure the correct positioning of the container in the mouth of the jacket, it may be pressed home by a stepped die, the shoulder 6 of the jacket neck resting upon the higher step (Fig. 6, not shown).
