Abstract
579,599. Spark-plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 13, 1945, No. 9209. Convention date, April 17, 1944. [Class 7 (iv)] A spark plug has a metal shield 6 fitting into the casing member 5 and has spaced projections 15 defining channels for bonding metal 8 between the shield and casing. A C- shaped resilient washer 12 localised beneath the end of the shield engages a metallic gasket 13 and holds the insulator 9 against a gasket 14 on shoulder 10 when the plug parts are assembled by a press-head B which may operate as described in Specification 564,884. While the parts are under compression a ring of bonding material 7 is fused by means of an induction heating coil D and the joint then cooled rapidly by water from a conduit C. In some cases circumferential ridges 17, Fig. 3, may be located below the ridges 15 to prevent flow of brazing metal beyond the shield. Instead of longitudinal ridges, spur-like projections may be formed on the shield members or all the ridges may be circumferential with a layer of brazing above the top,ridge. The ridges on spurs may be on the casing instead of the shield.
