Abstract
579,554. Regulating. CARTER CARBURETOR CORPORATION. May 31, 1944, No. 10455. Convention date, May 5, 1943. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] An internal-combustion engine having a plurality of cylinder groups A, B, is regulated by cutting out some of the cylinders by means comprising separate intake conduits 4, 3, to supply combustible mixture to each group, a manually operated throttle valve 13 for controlling the fuel supply to group A, the conduit supplying the other group being unthrottled, and a fuel valve 25, actuated by a combination of suction and throttle position, for controlling the fuel supply to the unthrottled group. When the throttle is opened to start the engine the fuel valve 25 and a metering rod 9 are raised through a connection comprising a slot 29, a cross pin 31, and a finger 32 carried by a lever 33, and a one-way connection 15 so that starting takes place on all the cylinders. As the engine speeds up the vacuum in the outer intake manifold 4 increases to about twelve or fifteen inches of mercury which, applied through an orifice 17, is sufficient to draw a piston 26 downwardly against a spring 27 and close the fuel valve 25. The engine then continues to operate on the outside group of cylinders only, until the vacuum falls to about four inches of mercury when the valve 25 is opened by the spring 27. To ensure that fuel discharge takes place instantly on opening valve 25 a cylinder 39, containing a floating piston 40, is mounted at the base of nozzle 24a, A spring 41 and suction, acting through a conduit 42, synchronizes the movement of piston 40 with the operation of the valve 25 which is maintained in the fully open or fully closed position by means of a spring 35, bent as at 36, 37, to ride over a "hump" 38. An accelerating pump 18 and thermostatically controlled choke valves 21, 44 are also provided. Specifications 412,957 and 472,090 are referred to.
