[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII]' A metal working press comprises a head 4 supported on columns 1; 2 and provided with a central opening forming a guide for an extension 6 on the cross-head 5 ; whereby eccentric loads applied to the crosshead are balanced by a couple effective in the head at the points of contact 8, 9a, or 8a, 9, between the extension 6 and its guide. Bending moments in the columns are thus avoided. Vertically spaced bearings may be provided in the guide. Pressure is applied to the cross - head by hydraulic cylinders 10 in the head carrying pistons connected to the cross-head by rods 12 having spherical ends. Retraction is effected by cylinders 17.
