Abstract

804,352. Mechanical presses. GOLDING, W. F. July 2, 1956 [June 30, 1955]. No. 18990/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIX] The movable platen 15 of an upstroking press is actuated through toggles 12 by a hydraulic ram 10. The ram is formed with an extension 17 sliding in a bore 18 in the platen 15. When the platen is at the end of its working stroke and not subject to load, there is a clearance between the end of the extension 17 and the end of the bore equal to the maximum permissible deflection of the platen. In operation, should there be overload due to the work between the platens, the maximum deflection is exceeded and the platen presses on the extension 17, thus increasing the pressure in the ram cylinder, thereby opening an overload valve and initiating a return stroke. The gap between the fixed and movable platens 1, 15 can be adjusted by raising or lowering (through screw-and-nut and worm gearing) a base 4 on which the ram and the toggle mechanism are mounted.
