Abstract

1372640 Deep drawing SCHULER GmbH 12 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 27264/72 Heading B3Q An overload protective device for a press comprises a fluid operated device, e.g. an hydraulic cushion or a fluid clutch, between the ram 1 and its drive, the fluid pressure in the device being varied during the operating stroke of the press. In one embodiment the cushion 2<SP>1</SP> is formed by a piston-cylinder assembly 2, 3 to between the ram 1 and its drive rod 5. The maximum pressure of the fluid permitted in the cylinder is controlled by a pressure relief valve 14 whose opening pressure is varied. The valve 14 is biased closed by constant gas pressure on the side 11 of a piston integral with the valve however the gas pressure on the side 25 of the piston is varied by movement of a piston 21 connected to a cam follower 22. The device and fluid system are mounted on the ram for movement therewith and the follower acts on a stationary cam 17. The pressure in the cushion may alternatively be controlled by electrically controlling a pressure relief valve or by using a series of switches operated in sequence as the ram moves or its drive rotates to control pressure release valves. The embodiment using a fluid clutch as the fluid operated device is not described in detail. The press may be a deep drawing press operated by a crank or eccentric or hydraulically.
