[Class 80 (iii)] [See also Groups V, XXVI, and XXIX] In a baling or like press in which the platen c, Fig. 1, is traversed by toggle mechanism, the toggle links e, f are connected to the platen and a fixed abutment and are coupled at a distance from their other ends by a pivot pin g movable in a slot in the cross-head k connected to the ram l of the steam, hydraulic, mechanical, or manual power applying device. When the links are closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the initial movement of the cross-head causes inclined surfaces i to engage rollers e<2>, f<2> on outwardly turned projections of the links e, f. The links are opened rapidly while the pin g moves in the slot in the cross-head, and thereafter the cross-head acts directly on the pin. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, an oscillating fluid-pressure cylinder m has a gland for the ram l, so that, on the working stroke, air is compressed in front of the piston and serves, in conjunction with a counterweight q, to withdraw the platen after the working pressure has been removed.
