Abstract

497,826. Power hammers. MASSEY, Ltd., B. & S., and MASSEY, H. F. June 28, 1937, Nos. 22321/38, (divided out of 497,799), and 29717/37. [Class 83 (iv)]. In double-drive hammers an hydraulic transmitter element is interposed between the suspended unit and an air spring device, the suspended unit comprising the tup, anvil, and operating means. As shown the tup operating means is that described in Specification 497,799 'but the tup may be operated by steam. The frame 10, anvil 11 and tup 12 are suspended from a stationary platform 13 formed with pillars 14 as a receptacle for compressed air. Between the platform 13 and the suspended unit is a cylinder 19 having a hollow plunger 18 connected to a cross-head 17 attached by links 16 to the frame 10. The cylinder 19 is supplied with oil under pressure acting on the piston 18 and also on a plunger 20 against which bears a piston 21 in an air cylinder 22. When air is supplied to the cylinder 22 the pistons 21, 20 are depressed and the piston 18 raised thus raising the suspended unit into operative position. To put the stamp out of use air is removed from the cylinder 22 and the suspended unit is lowered on to a fixed support.
