[Also in Group XXII] A punching or other machine having means for storing and releasing compressed liquid energy comprises a member reciprocable to effect a working stroke, a cylinder aocommodating a body of liquid and located wholly at one side of the said member and a piston within the cylinder connected to said member so that the liquid is compressed during the working stroke and thereafter expands to restore the member to its original position. As applied to a subpress punching machine, a punch 21 co-operating with a die 22 carries an offset piston 31 working in a cylinder 30 with a liquid reservoir 34. A stripper 29 actuated by a piston 32 is located on the punch by a ball 24 engaging grooves 25, 26 on the punch and stripper. On the downstroke of the press the punch is depressed and the stripper is lowered by the pressure of the liquid. When pressure is released from the punch the pressure of the liquid first raises the punch alone and later, through the ball 24, raises the stripper also. Specification 721,400 is referred to.
