Abstract

771,014. Shearing. PACIFIC INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 7, 1954 [June 25, 1954], No. 35381/54. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] The movable ram of a shearing-machine is held by jacks against guideways with light pressure when the machine is inoperative, the pressure increasing as the ram moves down on its shearing stroke. Each jack 269, comprising a piston 275 and a cylinder 271, holds the ram by springs 277 (Fig. 7) when the ram is inoperative and by liquid pressure from an accumulator 219 when the machine is operative. The accumulator is maintained under pressure by an air cushion 223. Piston and cylinder devices 197, 195 hold the work down on a table and are in the same hydraulic circuit as the jacks and the accumulator. The cylinders 195 are mounted on the ram and as the ram moves down are forced over the pistons increasing the pressure in the circuit so that the jacks 269 hold the ram against its guideways with a corresponding increase in pressure. A reservoir for the liquid is formed by a large diameter pipe extending between the end-plates of the machine. The shearing-machine is as described in Specification 770,638, [Group XXI]
