Abstract
647,317. Pneumatic presses. HILL, J. J., and TURNER, E. E. June 25,1948, No. 17175. [Class 122(iii)] [Also in Group V] In a pneumatic press for retreading tyres a lower platen 2 is pivoted about a hinge 10 to open and close the press by a piston and cylinder device 20 acting through a piston rod 22 and toggle links 24. The device 20 comprises upper and lower cylinders the lower containing a piston and communicating at its near end with the upper cylinder. The upper cylinder contains oil and the lower cylinder also on the side of the piston remote from the piston rod. Air under pressure can be directed to the other side of the piston and to the upper end of the upper cylinder to drive the piston in one or the other direction to open or close the press. The oil acts as a damper to the elastic action of the compressed air during displacement of the piston. The arm 23 by which the piston rod is connected to the lower toggle arm 24 has more than one aperture so that the point of connection of the rod 22 can be varied as required.
