Abstract

1476781 Apparatus for applying a force in a traction assembly O WALLANDER 12 June 1974 [13 June 1973] 26152/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division B8] An apparatus for applying a constant adjustable force, particularly suitable for use in a surgical traction assembly, comprises a cylinder 6 partitioned into chambers 2 and 5 by a piston 1, the chamber 2 being sealed by a flexible membrane 4 connected with the piston, and provided with a vacuum gauge 17 and a sealable port 16 for its evacuation and the chamber 5 being open to the atmosphere the force generated by the evacuation of chamber 2 being transmitted by a piston rod 3 to a pivoted lever 10 and thence by a piano wire 12 passing over pulleys 14, 15, the position of the connection 9 between the rod 3 and the lever being adjustable to vary the force transmitted to the wire. The cylinder 6 and the lever 10 are pivotably connected to a frame 8 and the pulley 14 is movable along a line AB so that the wire between the lever and this pulley may be made parallel to the piston rod 3 whatever the position of the connection 9. In a modification, the lever 10 extends through the frame 8 and the piston may be situated above the lever on the opposite side of the frame.
