Abstract
575,267. Microscopes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 7, 1943, No. 20449. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1942. [Class 97 (i)] A stage for holding an object in an optical apparatus, such as an electron or other microscope, and providing for independent adjustments of'the object in three directions, comprises a supporting plate 2 carrying vertical slideway members 3, 4 engaged by a vertical traversing member 7 which carries horizontal slideway members 16, 17 engaged by a horizontal traversing member 23, the last named being provided with longitudinal slideway members 28, 29 which are perpendicular to the slideways 19, 20 and are engaged by the member 33 comprising the article carrier 1 ; three mechanisms each comprising actuating means pivoted on an axis fixed in relation to the supporting plate 2, and operable by forces acting perpendicularly to it, control respectively the three traversing members. As shown, the member 7 is adjusted by a lever 39, which rocks a shaft 46 carrying an arm 47 connected by a link 48 to a fixture 49 secured to the slideway 16. A spring 44 urges the member 7 downwardly. The member 23 is adjusted horizontally by a lever 37 which through an arm 41 rocks a vertical shaft 42 carrying a finger 43 engaging a plate 27 carried by the member, which is urged to the left by a C-spring 50 engaging an abutment 51 carried by it. The longitudinal movement of the member 33 is effected against spring action by similar mechanism operated by a third lever 38. The levers may be adjusted and maintained in their adjusted positions against the action of the springs by screwed rods or other devices. The slideways may, as shown, be provided with ball bearings.
