[Class 97 (i).] In an illumination device using incident light and comprising an incandescent bulb and a converging optical system the axis of which intersects the axis of the microscopes in the object plane, the illuminating device is carried by a bracket mounted on the microscope tube so as to be rotatable about the axis of the microscope, and is adjustable on the bracket about an axis intersecting the said axis at right-angles at its point of intersection with the axis of the illuminating system. The microscope tube a carries a member c to which the objective d is attached and this member acts as a bearing for a ring e integral with the bracket f, the axis of the bearing being the axis g of the microscope. The bracket f has a groove h in which is displaceably mounted a slide i carrying the illumination system comprising the bulb o and a converging system in the form of a glass ball q. The bracket f is of circular shape, its centre of curvature being at the point of intersection of the axis g and the axis x of the illumination system. The slide i can be secured in any position in the guide h by a clamping screw l. The member q is mounted in a sleeve p which can be adjusted axially relatively to the bulb o.
