Abstract

573,029. Automatic smallarms. LANCHESTER, G. H. Sept. 14, 1943, No. 15072. [Class 119] The operative-element of a change-fire device is a conical finger 18 mounted eccentrically on the rear end of a spindle 20, which is lockable in either one of three angular positions by a finger-lever 23 and a spring latch 25. In its highest position, as shown in Fig. 3, the cone 18 engages an inclined notch 14a leading into a central bore 15 in the end of the trigger-bar 10 by which the sear 12 (pivoted at 28) is actuated. When the trigger 1 is pulled, the bar 10 is pushed forwardly by the trigger nose 8 and the incline 14a rides on the point 17 of the cone 18 to the position shown in dotted lines and disconnects the bar from the trigger. The sear spring 29 then reacts to re-set the sear into cocking position, thus permitting single shots only to be fired. For automatic fire, the spindle 20 is rotated 180 degrees to bring the cone 18 to its lowest position in which it engages a second inclined notch 14b in the end of the trigger-bar. In this case, the cone holds the bar in engagement with the trigger, so that the sear 12 is depressed so long as the trigger is held pulled. For the " safe " setting, the spindle 20 is rotated to an intermediate position, indicated at 41 in the end elevation of the trigger-bar shown in Fig. 4, in which position the conical point 17 engages a cylindrically-curved surface 16 at one side of the notches 14a, 14b. Movement of the bar to fire the weapon is thus prevented.
