An automatic firearm comprises a hammer having an extension with stops engaging, in the cocked position, hooks provided on pivoted catches of a trigger mechanism (Fig. 1, not shown). A device for limiting the number of shots in a burst is provided and includes a first rocking lever 15 which, by means of an arm 17 pivoting under the action of a fire control mechanism, is brought into an operative position in which, during firing, projections at its forward extremity co-operate one by one with a finger (Fig. 1, not shown) mounted on the hammer. At each shot the lever 15 is further pivoted against a return spring 18, the rearward end of the lever 15 having projections which engage one by one with a lug on one of the catches, the lug therefore being kept out of engagement with the hammer. During the penultimate shot the lever 15 engages a lower shoulder 16b of a second lever 16 to urge a segment 16c thereof in front of the lug of the one of the catches to hold the lug, the last projection of the rear end of lever 15 being disengaged from the lug and at the same time the projections on its forward extremity move away from the action of the finger. The lever 15 thus rotates under the action of its return spring 18 and in its travel entrains the lever 16 through a shoulder 16a thereof to disengage the lug and so end the burst. The number of shots in a burst depend on the number of projections on the forward and rearward ends of the lever. The finger may be spring loaded and the burst control device may be housed in a casing 11 held in the firearm by the axle of the hammer cooperating in a fork 12a and the pivot of the fire control mechanism which passes through an aperture 12b in the casing.
