Abstract

559,469. Automatic firearms. PATCHETT, G. W., and STERLING ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1942, No. 11520. [Classes 92 (ii) and 119] Relates to change-fire mechanism applicable particularly to recoiling breech-bolt guns of the blowback type. The sear 18 is mounted on the same pivot 17 as a trigger-operated sear-carrier 15 and has a forked tail 18b which receives the T-headed arm 20 of a sear-locking lever 19 pivoted on the carrier 15. The lever 19 has arms 19a, 22 which co-act with the finger 23 of a selector device, which may be set in positions B, C, D for safety, single shots, or automatic firing. The trigger 8 rocks the carrier by contact of a shoulder 14 with a roller 13 on the carrier. When the selector finger is in position B, it engages the locking-lever arm 22 and prevents movement of the sear-carrier and sear. In position C, when the trigger is pulled, the carrier is rocked clockwise and the finger 23 engages the arm 19a thereby rocking the lever 19 and disengaging its T-head from the sear tail. The sear is thus released and is urged upwards to recocking position by a spring-plunger device 21 which acts also upon the locking-lever. Upon release of the trigger, the carrier 15 together with the lever 19 are returned to cocked position, the former by a spring 11 and the latter by spring 21. In position D, the selector finger 23 cannot engage the locking-lever, which therefore holds the sear locked to the carrier 15, so that the sear remains depressed as long as the trigger pull is maintained. The sear is operative to hold the breech-bolt in open or closed positions, and when the mechanism is closed and set for "safety", the bolt cannot be jolted to open position. The trigger is shaped at 9 so as to fit closely in the triggerplate opening.
