Abstract

572,514. Hydraulic transmission of power. THOMAS, A. N. May 19, 1943, No. 7951. [Class 69 (ii)] The speed of a driven shaft is maintained at a constant value by a hydraulic transmission comprising a pump operated by the driving shaft and delivering liquid to a control means on the driven shaft responsive to centrifugal force and regulating the flow through the pump. A clutch 12 between a driving source and compressor comprises a casing 23 belt driven from the main shaft and carrying planet pinions 43 engaging a sun-wheel 42 in the driven shaft and co-operating therewith to pump liquid from the casing 12 into a chamber 58. The latter is connected to the driven shaft and carries radial chambers 63 having ports 69 controlled by spring-loaded valves 66. When the speed of the driven shaft reaches a predetermined value, the valves 65 move radially under centrifugal force to open the ports 69 and the pump discharges into the casing. The spring 65 may be manually or automatically adjustable to obtain any desired constant speed of the driven shaft.
