[Class 34 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] Shell cartridge cases to be used for practice, and other hollow bodies, are reinforced internally to prevent denting or similar damage, by expanding internal slats or blocks outwardly against the inner wall of the cartridge case or body. The cartridge case 15 may have a central rod 10 screwed into a plug 13 in the base and secured by screws 14 threaded into a plate 11 welded to the rod. A sleeve 16 on the rod 10 carries a plate 17 with collar 18 to position the lower ends of a set of inner slats 23 which engage a set of outer slats 22 bearing against the inner wall of the cartridge case. The upper ends of the slats are positioned by a hard-wood ring 21 with a coned seating 28, axial movement of the ring being restrained by a ring 24 soldered to the cartridge case after assembly. The inner and outer sets of slats are disposed as shown in Fig. 2 so that there are no continuous radial lines where slats meet. Axial movement of the sleeve 16 to expand the slats.against the inner wall of the cartridge case is effected by a nut 19 on the sleeve, engaging a threaded part of the rod 10. Hot glue may be poured into the cartridge case and excess removed before expanding the slats against the wall of the case. A closure 25 is finally fitted. The'slats may be tapered longitudinally where the reinforcement of a cylindrical body is necessary. In a modification a single set of slats, with non-radial meeting faces, is employed. In a further modification a central tubular member serves to locate the slats and to guide a pressure member which is actuated by a screw through the base of the cartridge case to expand the slats against the inner wall.
