Abstract
566,053. Forging magnesium alloys. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd., FOX, F. A., FISHER, A., and WILKINSON, R. G. May 31, 1943, Nos. 8688 and 19680. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group II] Articles are produced by impact forging a cast, extruded, or other piece of magnesium base alloy containing zirconium. For complicated articles a pre-forged blank may be used. The forging temperature may be 300‹- 500‹ C. and complicated shapes can be produced by one or a few blows in a finishing die without reheating. This may work all the metal of the piece treated. Suitable alloys contain 0.4 to 0.9 per cent of zirconium and 2 to 4 of zinc, with or without 1 to 3 of cadmium, or the percentages described in Specification '511,137, [Group II]. It is stated that hammer forgings have previously been made from aluminium base alloys and also from magnesium base alloys not containing zirconium, e.g. containing 3.5 per cent aluminium, 0.5 manganese, and 5 tin or 8 aluminium, 0.2 manganese, and about 0.3 zinc, known under the Registered Trade Mark " Elektron " AZ. 855.
