Abstract

564,332. Plate clamping devices. WEBB, W. June 24, 1943, No. 10212. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXII] A device for gripping the shank of a bolt, rivet, spindle, &c. in the temporary clamping of plates to be riveted, bolted, &c., employs a coiled spring, the diameter of which is raised by turning one end of the spring with respect to the other. A spring 4 that when free lightly grips the rivet &c. has one end 5 anchored in a slot in a thimble 1 apertured at 2 to pass the rivet. The other end 6 of the spring projects from a part circumferential slot 7. A pin 9 projecting from the thimble engages a bayonet slot 10 in a surrounding sleeve maintained in engagement by a screw cap 13 slidable and rotatable on a shank 14 having a head 17 secured in the thimble 1. A head 15 on the shank provides for the operation of the device and comprises a spring 16 engaging the cap 13. The end 6 of the spring 4 engages an axial slot 14 in the sleeve. In operation, the device is set by turning the parts so that the pin 9 engages the end of the slot 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The device is then pressed over the rivet end and the head 15 is depressed freeing the pin 9 to pass along the slot allowing the spring 4 to tighten and hold the rivet.
