Abstract

565,584. Chucks. SMITH, F. H., and EVANS, W. J. May 12, 1943, No. 7523. [Class 83 (iii)] A self-centring chuck has separate cam surfaces for the opening and closing movements of the jaws. The body has a stem 1 and a boss 3, and is formed with radial slots to receive the jaws 5. The sides of the jaws may be slightly inclined and clearance may be provided at 4 so that the jaws seat firmly without rocking. A base-plate 9' rotatable on the stem 1 and a cover-plate 10 rotatable on the boss 3 enclose a ring 8 formed with cam surfaces 12 that engage the ends of the jaws and cam surfaces 13 formed on the cover-plate 9 engage under spring plungers 14 that keep the jaws seated in their slots. The parts 8, 9 and 10 are connected by bolts 11. The cam surfaces 12 are centrally recessed to facilitate manufacture and are tapered towards the axis in a direction away from the stem. Clearance is provided at 16 so that, after the jaws have been caused to grip the work, the ring 8 may be forced axially to exert a wedge grip and prevent accidental slackening back.
