Abstract
563,722. Controlling the speed of super-chargers. SOC. ANON. A. SAURER. Nov. 9, 1942, No. 15816. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1941. [Class 7 (ii)] In apparatus for continuously varying the speed of a blower for an internal-combustion engine, particularly for aircraft, the blower is driven through a differential gear, the carrier 8 of which is variably braked by a piston air pump whose ports are controlled by a slide valve 19 and which operates against variable back pressure. The wheels 4, 5 of the blowerdriving train are journalled in the carrier 8 which has a toothed drag 9 connected to a crank-shaft of a pump having a piston 15. The valve 19 is reciprocated by an eccentric 20 to connect a duct 17 alternately to an inlet passage 22 and to a pressure chamber 24 which is throttled by a member 26 controlled by a barometric capsule 29. In normal operation the blower speed is such that the torques of the blower and pump drives are equal. If the air pressure now falls, the throttle 26 is moved to decrease the air escape 25 thereby increasing the torque of the pump and also the braking of the planet carrier. This decreases the air pump speed and increases the blower speed. With constant engine speed, the increased blower speed may be arranged to maintain constant blowing pressure with varying external air pressure. Alternatively, the torque of the air pump may be regulated in dependence on engine speed or pressure of air in the inlet pipe of the engine.
