Abstract

562,994. Arc-rupturing in switches; fluid-blast switches. COATES, W. A., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1943, No. 2318. [Class 38À(v)] A switch has a body of resistance material to which the arc - root is transferred during normal operation, the material being carbon or one having a negative restriking-voltage characteristic such as " Thyrite " and " Metrosil " (both being Registered Trade Marks). The means for effecting the transfer may comprise a fluid blast, magnetic field, or convection. In a liquid-immersed switch as in Specifications 369,235 and 422,292, wherein the metal casing 6 is closed by an insulating wall 8 having apertures 13 through which liquid is forced from 'chamber 9 by the pressure in chamber 1, the main passage 11 for the movable contact 3 has a half-sleeve or bush 21 of the material and the upper and lower faces 21a, 21b have a spray deposit of copper for ensuring good contact and protecting the material against the effects of gas-production at the contacts. The casing 6 is directly connected to the body 21 by a copper plate 22 so that when the arc is transferred from contact 2 to the body, it is in series with the body. In an air-blast form, Fig. 2, the movable contact 32 is withdrawn through a sleeve 37 of the material, having spray deposits 37a, 37b for affording good contact with the arc-root and metal casing 34, respectively.
