Abstract

537,603. Liquid-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 13, 1940, No. 14179. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] In a circuit-breaker of the "impulse" type a valve is interposed between the piston and arc-chamber so that if the arc-pressure is greater than the piston-pressure, the arc-pressure closes the valve, thus ensuring extinction of the arc by its own pressure. The piston may be arranged and operated as described in Specification 461,699. The contact-structure comprises a fixed contact 9 directly mounted on the metal oil-container 1, a floating contact 12 on a plate 13 biassed by springs 14 against the base of the insulating baffle 15, and a movable contact 5 guided in an insulating bushing 6, the arrangement being that a short arc initially drawn between 9, 12 generates a pressure for supplementing the impulse blast through passage 16 on to the arc subsequently drawn between 5, 12. The valve comprises a plate 27 with apertures 28<1> therein adapted to be closed by discs 28, which are guided on posts 29 and may be six in number arranged equidistantly around the contact 9. The posts 29 also secure a metal plate 30 having extensions 30<1>, whereby the electromagnetic forces set up if the arc tends to bow outwardly and strike the valve plate 27, oppose the forces tending to bow the arc, and thereby centre it and keep it short. In order to keep arc-gases out of the blast through passage 16, a baffle is provided in the form of a spout 32 depending from baffle 15 and a semicircular ridge 33 on the plate 30.
