[Class 39 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An electric torch has a single cell secondary battery of the so-called dry type with a vent arranged in a position remote from the lamp and corrodible parts of the circuit. In one form, Fig. 1, the cell comprises a cup-shaped external electrode 19 coated inside with negative active material and a central electrode 22 carrying positive active material and surrounded by porous separating material, the whole of the contents being assembled under pressure and held by a washer 25 of porous ceramic material clamped by turning in the rim of the cap 19 as at 26. The cell and vent tube 30 are sealed with pitch into a tube 11, e.g. of plastic, with the surface 20 of the cell against a shoulder 18 and the sealing enclosing the projecting end of the electrode 22 and the lead 27. This lead is connected to a screwed ring moulded on to the tube 11. The lamp is carried by a reflector 33 of conducting material secured by insulating means into a conducting head 12 which carries a switch member 40 and screws on to the ring 15. The centre contact of the lamp engages a U-shaped spring 39 secured to the surface 20. A cap 13 is screwed on the opposite end of the tube. To re-charge, the head 12 is removed and the cell is stood in an inverted position on a suitable holder making connection with the elements 39, 15. In a modification, Fig. 2, the cell is sealed in an insulating tube 10 projecting beyond the sealing to protect a vent plug 62. The sealing also secures a reflector 51 of plastic material which carries the lamp 36 and a switch member 54 adapted to engage the outer lamp contact when operated by a button 56 projecting from the tube. Re-charging contacts 60, 61 are provided.
