Abstract

561,827. Cooling discharged materials. TRAYLOR ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING CO. March 1, 1943, No. 3356. Convention date, May 27, 1942. [Class 51 (ii.)] The material discharged from kilns such as kilns for calcining limestone is cooled in a series of rotary muffle tubes arranged within a substantially horizontal housing and subjected externally to sprays of cooling water and, if desired, to currents of cooling air also. As shown in Fig. 2, the cooler comprises a rotary housing 5 having front and rear header plates 6, 6a supporting muffle tubes 7 comprising telescopic sections 7a, 7b. The sections 7a are cooled by a current of air admitted at 17 and following a tortuous course to an outlet 17a. The sections 7b which are located in the rear part of the housing separated by a partition 15 from the front part are cooled by water sprayed by a perforated pipe 31. Material enters the cooler from a hopper 4 and waterjacketed shoot 23 leading to a conical chamber 22 from which it passes into the rotary muffle tubes 7 and is discharged at their rear ends into' a conical chamber provided with blades 30 and thence to an outlet 42. Cooling water escapes from the housing through opening 38 into a receptacle 39. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the muffle tubes 51 are arranged in a fixed housing .75 open at the bottom and the muffle tubes 51 are secured to end plates rotating in bearings. The muffle tubes are cooled by water sprays from pipes 63, 77, and the water collects in a receptacle 78.
