Abstract

744,744. Heating or cooling granular materials. NATIONAL COAL BOARD. Oct. 20, 1952 [Oct. 18, 1951], No. 24325/51. Class 64(2). [Also in Group XXX] Comminuted solid, such as coal, is fed into apertures 7B at the bottoms of vertical tubes 1 above inlet apertures for fluidizing gas, the tubes being enclosed by a casing 2, in which circulates heat exchange medium such as water for cooling the coal, with the tube tops arranged around a pipe 10 down which the solid passes to an outlet after leaving the tops of the tubes. The coal is fed from a manifold 7A and cold fresh air or returned cooled air for fluidizing and cooling is fed from a manifold 5 into conical bases 1A of the tubes 1. The coal fluidized in the tubes is cooled by water flowing from an inlet 3 into a double wall of the casing 2 and from thence into the space surrounding the tubes and to an outlet 4. A cyclone separator 9A, in a chamber 8 into which the tubes 1 and pipe 10 open, traps suspended solids. The spent air passes out through a top duct 11 to a further separator (not shown) and may then be cooled and re-circulated, while the trapped solids pass to the base of the pipe 10 through a central pipe 15. The Provisional Specification describes also chambers each having an individual water jacket.
