Abstract

498,712. Hot closets; air-cooled condensers. CROFT, C. M., REA, D. B., and GLADWIN, J. R. F. Dec. 3, 1937, Nos. 33500/37 and 14704/38. [Classes 34 (i) and 64 (iii)] A hot closet provided with a heater chamber at its base and hollow walls for hot air or products of combustion is combined with a superimposed condenser for separating out moisturefrom the damp air leaving the closet. Articles arranged on racks h in the drying cupboard a are dried by hot air rising from a perforated base plate a<1> spaced from the sides of the chamber and also by streams of hot air emerging from apertures b2 in the sides of the chamber communicating with ducts b arranged in the hollow walls of three sides of the cupboard. A centrally apertured plate is arranged between, the perforated baseplate a<1> and the heater chamber cover plate, air entering through apertures a4 flowing over the latter, through the central aperture of the intermediate plate and thence through the perforated plate a<1> up into the drying cupboard. Air enters the side ducts b through apertures b<1> coincident with the apertures a<4> and is heated by combustion gases from a burner in the heater chamber d flowing through adjacent flues c in the hollow walls to a header e communicating with a chimney. The flues care provided with flat tubular connectors c<1> and with baffles c<2>. The air cooled condenser comprises rectangular-sectioned vertical tubes arranged between tube plates k, k<1>, and closed by a base plate l and cover l<1>, a connecting flue n for the damp air being arranged between the condenser and the hot closet. The condenser is divided into seven passes by division plates m, m<1> and m<2>, the dried air issuing through an outlet o and the condensate falling on to the base plate l which is sloped to form a trough at its lowermost part. Short ferrules p between the upper tube plate and the cover allow circulation of air through the middle of the condenser. The latter is supported by a perforated wall rand insulation is packed between it and the closet. When a gas ring is employed in the heater chamber, the ring may be arranged to be automatically swung out when the door d<2> of the heater chamber is opened, electric heating may be employed.
