Abstract

789,715. Combustion apparatus. STAMICARBON N.V. Feb. 24, 1956 [Feb. 26, 1955; Sept. 26, 1955], No. 5861/56. Class 51 (1). A solid fuel fired furnace installation comprising a water-jacketed hopper 1, a vertical combustion chamber 2 through which combustion air is adapted to pass horizontally and a grate 9 associated with ash removal means 10 is adapted such that, if necessary, the chamber 2 may be partitioned by a removable and apertured grate-like wall 21. In Fig. 1 the wall partitions the chamber 2 such that the combustion space is between walls 21 and 5, the latter, like the front wall 4 and the wall 21, comprising vertical water tubes joined at top and bottom by suitable headers and provided externally with fins 6 for preventing fuel passing between them. The wall 21 is removably joined to the furnace water-cooling system by a conduit 23 at each end of a top header 22 connecting with its associated hopper side wall and by a conduit 27 and a connecting tube 28 which joins bottom header 25 to the bottom header 8 of the wall 4. Combustion air is supplied by a fan 11 to a space 12 from which it is passed in quantities dependent upon the position of a damper 13 to conduits 16 and 18 for issuance into the secondary combustion chamber 19 and to a chamber 15 for passage horizontally through the walls 4, 21, and the fuel in the chamber 2. Some air from the chamber 15 may pass through a regulated aperture 20 to flow either over or under the grate 9 before passing up the chamber 2 to the fuel therein. A plate 29 prevents fuel from the hopper falling into the space between walls 4, 21 and a plate 30 prevents air from passing directly through the wall 4 to above the grate 9. In Fig. 3, the wall 21 is removably joined centrally to a conduit 34 connecting the hopper side walls and at both ends of its header 25 to a water space 36 of the furnace. Each connection to the space 36 has a cover 37. The space 38 between walls 21, 5, is closed at the top by a plate 39 and the plate 29 is used to direct fuel to the combustion space. A plate 40 prevents direct air flow under the grate 9 and up into the space 38. The secondary air conduit 16 has an additional air distribution conduit 18<SP>1</SP> which is removed on removal of the wall 21. Specifications 698,097, 698,098, 698,099 and 698,100 are referred to.
