Abstract

1,167,168. Shell and tube heat exchangers. COMBUSTION ENG. Inc. 16 Nov., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 51394/66. Heading F4A. A spherical vapour generator 12 is supplied with feedwater through openings 40 in an annular inlet tube 38, the water passing upwardly over water heating tube bundles 26 located within an annular baffle 32 which divides the liquid space 16 of the generator into downcomer and generation sections 34, 36 respectively. Steam so generated passes through screen dryer elements 94 to vapour outlet 20, whilst separated water is recirculated through downcomer section 34. Heating fluid from inlet nozzle 52 passes through duct 64 and sleeve 66 to upper inlet compartment 58 in central manifold 30, and then through the U-tubes 28 to lower outlet compartment 60, to exit through outlet nozzle 54. The U-tubes which are formed in vertical rows, extend in a circular arc outwardly towards the baffle 32 (Fig. 2), and are carried by tube supports 74 extending between annular structural members 78, 80. The latter are in turn supported on radial ribs 82. Manholes 22 and 48 provide access to the shell 12 and the manifold 30 respectively. The sleeve 66 is threadedly secured at its upper end to an annular plate 56 defining the upper and lower manifold chambers 58, 60 respectively, and is in mating engagement through a flange 90 on its end with a like flange 92 on duct 64. The sleeve 66 and the flange 90 on its end are formed of material having a different thermal expansion from that of duct 64, so that on cooling down from operating temperature, the sleeve 66 if the top threaded connections were released, would telescope over the duct 64 thereby allowing access room to effect repairs within the manifold 30.
