Abstract

937,301. Tubular heat exchangers. W. C. HOLMES & CO. Ltd. Jan. 18, 1960 [Oct. 18, 1958], No. 33340/58. Class 64 (3). Apparatus for heat exchange between two gases comprises a casing 19 containing two parallel tube groups 10, 11, each removable as a unit, the casing having a gas inlet duct 28 which tapers from the inlet end and which is open on one side to the interior of the casing. This arrangement is said to equalize gas pressure over the whole cross-section of the casing. As shown, the tube groups 10, 11 are separated by a hollow, heat-insulating partition 16 below which are provided the inlet and outlet ducts 28, 29 for the gas flowing over the tubes, the ducts being separated by a plate member 25 so disposed that each of the ducts is of tapering form, decreasing towards the centre of the casing. Gas entering through the inlet duct 28 flows over the tube groups 10, 11 in succession before being discharged through the outlet duct 29. The other gas enters a bottom header formed with inlet and outlet ducts, also of tapering form provided by a plate 30, and flows through the tube groups in series by way of intercommunicating headers 36 together forming a return header at the upper end of the tube groups. Each tube group is individually removable from the apparatus after detaching cover plates 13 and 33A and is resiliently mounted in the casing, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), being retained in position by its own weight and by weights 38 placed on top of the upper headers 36 without the use of bolts or flange connections.
