Cement or other material is fed at 4 into a ring-shaped compartment 1 with inner and outer sheet iron walls 2, 3 over which flows cooling water, while air from a pipe 6 passes up through the porous bottom 5 of the compartment 1 to fluidize the cement. As shown there may be two or more compartments 1 connected in series by a bottom passage 13 also having a porous base portion 5 for maintaining fluidization. The cement enters the second device at the bottom and leaves through a top outlet 7. In Figs. 3 and 4 the devices are of circular section as indicated in Fig. 4 but in Fig. 1 they are of square section. They may be of elliptical or polygonal section. There may be vertical baffles in the compartment 1 so that the cement moves in an up and down path. In Fig. 3 the cement inlet is a pipe 14 extending almost to the bottom of the ring-shaped compartment 1 and the outlet to the passage 13 is a pipe 15 leading from near the top of the compartment. In Fig. 4 there are no pipes 14, 15 but vertical partitions 16, 17 prevent direct flow from inlet 4 to passage 13 and from thence to outlet 7. The cooling water in Fig. 1 flows from header troughs 10 in films over the walls 2, 3 to be collected in troughs 11 before passing to a drain. In Figs. 3 and 4 the water is supplied at the bottom to a chamber 8 to flow out through a top pipe 9 to external header troughs 10 for distribution over the wall 3. Water jackets may also be used.
