In a hot water storage tank 1 surrounded by an annular jacket 3 through which a heating fluid flows, the jacket contains a helical pipe 4 through which the water passes to or, as shown, from the tank 1, and the inlets 6, 8 and outlets 10, 9 for the water and the heating fluid are so related in position that the water and heating fluid flow in countercurrent. A helical partition 7 or partitions may be provided between the turns of the pipe. In one form, the water flows through two helical pipes arranged in parallel in the lower part of the jacket, before entering the bottom of the tank.
