Abstract

378,313. Drying falling materials. PORTEUS, G., Leeds Bridge Works, Hunslet, Leeds. Jan. 12, 1932, No. 867. [Class 34 (ii).] Corn and other granular materials are cooled and dried by being made to travel in a zig-zag course between perforated diamond-shaped casings while subjected to a current of air. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a chamber 1 having air inlets 2 and an outlet 3 which is surrounded by perforated plates 4 which extend the full length of the chamber. The plates 4 are formed with outwardly projecting ribs 6 as shown in Fig. 3. The zig-zag path for the material which is fed to the hopper 7 is formed by the spaces between the plates 4 and an outer casing consisting of a number of inclined bars 9 supported by frames 10. Discharge choots 8 are provided with slides 14 which can be closed or opened. Air drawn through the inlets 2 passes through the granular material and the perforations in the plates 10 and escapes through the outlet 3.
