Abstract

A number of drying sections 4 in a shaft 1 each have inverted V-shaped passageways 8 extending horizontally into a descending granular material which is to be dried, wherein alternate passageways are open at one end to a supply duct 9 and the other passageways are open at the other end to a discharge duct 10 for a drying medium blown by a fan 11 at the bottom of the supply duct 8. The shaft also has cooling sections 5 of the same construction as the drying sections 4 which are connected to a chamber 12 containing one or more heat exchangers 13, which chamber 12 is also connected to the suction side of the fan 11 and between the drying 4 and cooling sections 5 is an intermediate section 15, connected to the atmosphere through an adjustable inlet 17, through which ducts 16 connect the chamber 12 with the discharge duct 10. About half-way up the drying sections 4 the discharge duct 10 has an adjustable baffle 18 to direct the warmer drier air from the lower drying sections through the intermediate section 15 to the heat exchangers 13 for recycling.
