Abstract

536,776. Drying air and gases. LAIRD, W. Dec. 13, 1939, No. 32163. [Class 34 (i)] Between a cylinder 2a of absorbent material such as silica gel and its supporting casing 1 are a number of chambers 5 formed by radial partitions 4, and inside the cylinder is a rotated baffle 11 having a longitudinal slot 11 allowing the wet air or gas to be drawn by a fan 16 from a selected number of the chambers 5 through the part of the cylinder in front of the chambers.. When the absorbent becomes loaded with moisture, the fan is cut off and the absorbent is heated by embedded electrical resistances, and upon further rotation of the baffle, the air inlet 14 in a plate 10 at the bottom of the chambers and a closure plate 13 at the top move over other chambers to allow cooling air to be drawn by a fan 18 through holes 19 in the casing over the heated wet part of the absorbent. In modifications, the cylinder is rotated and the baffle is stationary, the absorbent material is heated by a radiant heater instead of by electrical resistances, and part of the dried air is passed over an external heater and used for heating the absorbent material.
