Abstract

762.787. Drying or withering tea &c. DAVIDSON & CO., Ltd. March 3. 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6561/54. Class 34(2) In a method of drying or withering tea or like material the tea is subjected to the action of a drying medium in two or more stages, a subsequent stage being effected in one or more chambers having a capacity equal approximately to the bulk of the material at the next preceding stage. The apparatus shown consists of a rotary drum 11 having two concentric tubes 15, 16 coaxial with the drum and forming a duct 17 and an annular space divided by radial portions 27 into ducts 18, 19, the annular space between tube 16 and the drum wall being divided by a fixed radial partition 23 and displaceable partitions 24, 25 into chambers 20, 21, 22 of equal capacity. Partitions 24, 25 consist of rotatable flaps 26 which either shut off the chambers or allow material to be decanted into a neighbouring chamber. Tubes 28, perforated at 29, are mounted radially. communicating with ducts 18, 19, duct 19.having its ends blanked off so as to receive only air from fan 41 via duct 17 and ports 31 while duct 18 and thus chambers 20, 21 receive air from a fan 38. The material is charged into chamber 20, 21 via doors 33 with flaps 26 in alignment and hot air supplied by fan 38. At the end of the primary stage flaps 26 are rotated and the material, in chambers 20, 21, which will have been reduced-in bulk by fifty per cent is decanted into chamber 22 which is thus filled to capacity. Hot air is supplied by fan 41 and the withering completed. The moisture laden air escapes through perforations 32 in the drum wall. During this second stage a second batch of material may receive primary withering in chainbers 20, 21. In modified apparatus separate drums are used.
