Abstract

850,611. Malting apparatus. COLUMBIA MALTING CO. Sept. 24, 1957 [Sept. 24, 1956], No. 29966/57. Class 14(2) A malting apparatus has an outer imperforate housing, a perforate horizontal drum rotatably mounted in or with the housing, a perforate inner member extending longitudinally within the drum, an air discharge stack leading from the outer housing, a fan or blower for supplying air into the inner member, an air conduit connecting the fan or blower directly with the perforate inner member, means for supplying air to the fan or blower, means for introducing grain into the drum and means for discharging grain from the drum. Grain to be malted is admitted through a series of loading openings 21 (Fig. 1) into a rotatable drum 11 formed of perforated, inwardly concave arcuate plates (Fig. 3, not shown) and resting on rollers 15 within a housing 19. Air entering a tempering chamber 40 either from the atmosphere or recirculated as indicated in the figure by arrows, or both, depending on the position of the damper 45, is heated or moistened according to requirements by burners 47 and sprinklers 49, and the heated or moistened air is forced by a fan or blower 33 into a perforated cylindrical member 39 (Fig. 2). The member 39 is supported at the right end of the drum by an imperforate wall 61, but its left conically-formed end 65 is supported from the drum frame by radial tensions rods 63. Within the member 39 there slides a perforated cylindrical member 67, whose opposite end is supported on a movable partition 69. The left end of the drum 11 is open but is cross-connected by transverse 1-beams 71 which carry a portion of a partition operating mechanism (Fig. 9) by which the partition 69 can be moved longitudinally through the movement of an hydraulicallyactuated cylinder 95. Water for the steeping and germinating of the grain is introduced through a perforated pipe 157 and a perforated pipe 163 slidingly fitted within the pipe 157 (Fig. 8, not shown); both pipes are capable of rotation with the drum. The partition 69 is moved from an inward position outwardly during the loading of the drum with grain, and again during the steeping and germinating when the grain increases in volume, while for the drying and for discharge of the malted grain into a conveyer trough 29 the partition is moved inwardly; a desired level of grain over the members 39 and 67 is thereby maintained at all times. Two motors (Fig. 5, not shown) of different power may be employed alternately to suit the varying quantities of air required in the different stages of the malting. In a modified construction, (Fig. 10), the perforated drum 11 rotates with an imperforate housing 182.
