Abstract
651.284. Drying apparatus. TILTMAN LANGLEY LABORATORIES, Ltd., LANGLEY, M., and GERRITSEN, J. J. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5665. [Class 34(ii)] Apparatus for the drying of crops by passing through the material heated gases circulated in a continuous cycle obtains the heated gases from liquid fuel burners, each of which comprises a short inner cylinder in which combustion takes place and to which fuel and primary air are admitted, and an outer cylinder through which further air passes to be heated, which air subsequently mixes with the primary air and products of combustion to constitute hot dry gas. As shown, fuel burners according to Specification 595,864 are employed and the apparatus comprises a drying drum d having a housing 1 with banjo fittings 2, 3, bolted its walls at opposite ends. A gas inlet c admits the gases to a duct 4 between the wall of the housing and an inner wall so that the gases are conducted to banjo fitting 3, flow inward as shown by arrows 7 and enter the central part of the rotor 8 which consists of a shaft 9 journalled in bearings 10 on brackets 11 and carrying a rotary drum. The latter consists of spiders 12 keyed to shaft 9 and supporting a perforated cylinder 13, the cylinder being closed at one end but open at the other to receive gases from the fitting 3. The space outside the drum is divided into four chambers by radial plates 16 carrying tines 18 and these spaces are enclosed by plates 19a, 19b the plate 19a extending to the peripheral wall but the plate 19b being shorter to allow gases to escape into the end of the drum and then into fitting 2 and into trunking e to be re-circulated. The rotor is constantly rotated by a motor through suitable gears. As illustrated there are four burners f delivering into a casing 29 each burner having a separate control so that one or more burners may be used depending on the humidity of the crop.
