Abstract
567,203. Apparatus for drying clay &c. SUMMERVILLE, J. March 20, 1943, No. 4574. [Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for drying clay and like materials by waste combustion or other gases, hot air or steam, comprises a hollow brick &c. structure 10 subdivided by vertically-spaced grids 14 ... 20 into a number of compartments 21 ... 27, each compartment being provided with gas inlet and outlet ports 28, 29 respectively communicating with inlet and outlet passages 12, 13 disposed at opposite sides of the said structure and locating a radial stirring arm or arms 32 mounted on a central vertical rotary shaft 31. The clay is fed into the uppermost compartment 21 from a wet-pan &c. mill 38, which surmounts the structure 10, and passes downwards in succession through all the compartments, to be discharged from the lowermost one 27 through a hopper-shaped outlet 39 to a conveyer &c. passage 40. The shaft 31 and the shaft 34 of the mill 38 are driven by a motor 36 through gearing 35, and the gas outlet ports 29 are fitted with control dampers 30 which are preferably individually operable from the exterior of the structure 10. Openings 33, Fig. 3, normally closed by doors, provide access to the several compartments 21 ... 27. Gas heating means may be located within the inlet passage 12, and an induced or forced draught fan may be used in conjunction with the apparatus.
