Abstract

Rotary-chamber apparatus. - Cocoa, coffee, other beans and berries, copra, &c. are dried in perforated cylinders carried by spiders mounted on a rotary shaft within a casing through which hot air is circulated, the air being heated by a furnace below the casing. The perforated cylinders x are provided with sliding or hinged doors y and with internal ribs z for turning over the material as the cylinders revolve round the shaft u, which, as shown, is operated by hand through belt gearing, but may be operated by power. The casing n is mounted ou an airheating furnace a, and is provided with a hinged or sliding door r to enable the cylinders to be withdrawn when the material is dried. The axes f<1> of the cylinders are pressed in one direction by springs f<2> located in recesses in one of the spiders. The cylinders are removed from the spiders by liberating each end f<1> in turn by an axial movement; eye-bolts a<2> on the end disks of the cylinders are then attached to chains b<1>, the cylinder is raised by means of a handwheel d<1>, a nut b<2>, a threaded link c<1>, and a right and left handed screw b', whereupon the cylinder is conveyed away by a traversing trolly o. The cylinders may also be made to revolve on their axes if necessary. Air entering through openings m at the back of the furnace is heated while passing through flues k sur. rounding the combustion chamber b and passes upwards into the casing n. The circulation may be increased by a fan or blower, and the amount regulated by a damper or hit-and-miss grating o, similar regulating-devices being provided for the openings m if necessary. The hot air and combustion products do not come into contact, and are discharged respectively through chimneys p, h provided with pivoted dampers j. A number of casings may be arranged on a common shaft, and clutches provided whereby each drying-machine may be stopped and started independently.
