To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. HAGAN, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, citizen of the United States, have invented or" discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Drying Apparatus, of which improvements the following is a specification. The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in drying apparatus of the class or kind in which the material; to be treated is fed into one end of a heated longitudinally inclined revolving cylinder and is discharged from the opposite end.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved apparatus; Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections on planes indicated respectively by the lines II-II and IIIIII Fig. 1. In the practice of my invention the cylinder through which the material passes while being dried, consists of a series of longitudinal sections 2 having their inner and outer walls concentric and of a transverse curvature dependent on the diametric di- ,mensions of the cylinder.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3 one of the side or radial walls of each section is extended inwardly so as to form, when the sections .are arranged together a series of longitudinal ribs 3, which will carry up portions of the material as the cylinder is revolved and permit them to drop freely as the ribs are moved around. The cylinder sections areinclosed and held in position by brick Work as indicated at 4, which is held in place 1 a metal shell 5.
The cylinder is rotatably supported by means of suitably arranged and supported pairs of rollers 6, which serve as antifriction bearings for the rings or tires 7 on the cyl-' inder. The pairs of rollers are so relatively arranged that the cylinder will have such a downward inclination from the end ,into which the material is fed, that the latter will move along through the cylinder as it is revolved. As shown in Fig. 1, a sleeve 11, one end of which fits loosely into the rear end of the cylinder, extends through a bustle pipe 12 into a receiving box 13 having adischarge chute 13. ,The bustle pipe with which the passages in the sections 2 connect is adapted to receive products of combustion from either solid or gaseous fuel. In the construction shown the-bustle pipe is connected to a fire chamber for solid fuel. As before stated the products of combustion pass from the bustle pipe through the hollow sections highly heating the latter and are discharged into an annular bustle pipe 14 at the feed end of the cylinder. As shown in Fig, 1 the inner wall 15 of this bustle pipe extends a From the bustle pipe the products of combustion escape through the stack 16.
While the material to be treated may be fed into the cylinder in any suitable manner it is preferred to employ a hopper 17 provided with a spout 18 extending through the bustle 14 into the front end of the cylinder. The material is constantly stirred by the longitudinal ribs and portions are lifted up and separated from the mass, thereby permitting the escape of steam and vapors and subjecting larger surfaces to the action of the heat.
The inner chamber of the bustle pipe 14 is provided with an opening controlled by a slide 19 for the escape of steam and gases into the stack.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a drying apparatus, the combination of a cylinder composed -of a plurality of longitudinal hollow sections, a heat generator connected to the passages formed through the sections, and means for rotating the sections.
