648,711. Drying apparatus. BOBY, Ltd., R., GUINNESS, SON & CO., Ltd., A., and STEWART, Sir, F. C. Feb. 2, 1948, No. 2955. [Class 34(ii)] [Also in Group VI] A plant for steeping, germinating and drying grain comprises a rotatable drum 10 having an air inlet 15 and outlet 16 constituted by hollow trunnions, an air conditioning unit 20 and an air heater 24 in an air circulating system connected to the inlet and outlet ,the air circulating system comprising a valved air inlet 30 and outlet 29 in the main duct 26 and a duct 28 byepassing the heater having air inlet 34 and outlet 35. Thus the air exhausted from the drum may be returned to it via the conditioner 20 without passing through the heater. By means of inlets 34, 30 and outlets 35, 29 air may be drawn from and exhausted to atmosphere and the proportion of fresh and re-circulated air varied. A fan 22 operates to blow air through the system during germination only, the large volume required for drying being driven by a separate fan 23 although one fan may serve both purposes. The air entering the drum is deflected by a baffle 14 under and then up through the grain resting on the perforated floor 13 and through a perforated baffle 14<SP>1</SP> at the opposite end of the drum. A number of drums may be used in conjunction with a common air conditioner and air drier, valves being arranged to seal or connect the drums so that steeping may proceed in one and germination in another, or an individual air conditioner may be provided for each drum the air heating system being common to all and valves provided to seal or connect the drums.
