Abstract
1391070 Drying grain PHILDON ENG CO PTY Ltd 5 Oct 1972 [5 Oct 1971] 46011/72 Heading F4G [Also in Division C6] The steeping, germinating, drying and kilning of ceral grain in malting is carried out in an apparatus consisting essentially of a rotatable horizontal drum 2, Fig. 3, having a grain compartment 6 bounded by a perforated floor 8, Figs. 3 and 4, and the apparatus includes provision 9, Figs. 3 and 6, at one end of the drum for loading the grain compartment with grain and discharging it therefrom and, at the other end, detachable, piston-operated, conduiting 31, Figs. 3 and 7, providing (when connected to the drum) for the flow and recirculation of air from an inlet line 27 into a compartment 7 of the drum and back through the grain compartment 8 and outlet line 28. Water for the steeping and germinating is introduced and extracted through a conduit 44, while air for operating pneumatic appliances in the drum enters through conduit 45. These are coupled to a rotary gland 46 and enter the drum coaxially in the centre of the drum wall. Some liquid is left in compartment 7 until after the germination. Grain admitted into screw conveyer 12 through a duct 15 is urged by the screw into the blades 16 of an impeller which propel the grain laterally through a pneumatically operated closure flap 17, Fig. 4, into the grain compartment 8. Angularly arranged flights 26 assist in spreading the grain along the length of the compartment as the drum is rotated. Discharging of grain is effected by reversing the rotation of the drum and screw conveyer 12 and opening a door 24. As a result the grain is urged into the transfer chamber 19 and from there it passes along the screw to an outlet opening 69 During germination recirculated air, together with some fresh air entering duct 51, Fig. 8, through an opening 67, is humidified by sprays 62 of water and is blown by a single fan 61 into the inlet line 27. For kilning, fresh air entering through lourves 55 is heated over a fire box 58 and two fans are employed. (For Figures see next page.)
