Abstract

326,871. Filsz, H. Dec. 20, 1928. Gravity, materials descending by.-In apparatus for drying grain &c. of the kind in which the grain falls through a chamber having central roof-shaped baffles e and lateral inclined baffles d, beneath which series of cavities are formed in the grain stream, the central and lateral baffles are all perforated so that air admitted to one series of cavities reaches the other series of cavities by flowing upwardly through one series of baffles and the material resting thereon, and downwardly through the other series of baffles. The drier is divided into an outlet section a in which the drying air is preheated, drying sections b, b<1> to which hot air is supplied by a fan l, and an inlet section c in which the grain is preheated by part of the air exhausted from the drying sections. The baffles are so spaced that the layers of grain in the inlet and outlet sections are thinner than those in the drying sections. The air enters and leaves the drying chamber through openings in the end walls, and tubes t, Fig. 6, may be provided so that the air enters the cavities at both ends. The grain is discharged by an oscillating vane wheel having a pair of pockets E, E<1>, Fig. 8, which are alternately brought beneath the outlet. The rate of discharge is varied by using a smaller pair of pockets F, F<1>. Air chambers H may be formed in the outlet section for additional cooling of the grain. The tapered outlet section may be divided by transverse inclined baffles (not shown) to equalize the flow of grain through the outlet section.
