Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals 1 indicates a stationary tubular casing having an'inlet opening at 2 and an outlet openingat 3.- Casing 1 is closed at the ends in any desired manner, as for instance by the end walls 4 and 5, which if desired may act as a support for the casing. A shaft 6 preferably hollow extends through the casing centrally and preferably through the side walls 1 and 5 so as to be properly journaled, one end of said shaft being provided with a pulley or other driving means 7. Rigidly secured to the shaftk 6 is a plupair of side members'12 and 13 and a bottom lat'curved at 15 so as'to.` scrape against the `casing -1 as indicated inFigure 2. The end l'opposite 15 falls 'short of casing 1 so that the matter on the-.blade may freely vfall therefrom under the vaction of gravity. The blade ll'carried by the vdisk 8 Vgathers up the material 1T, which is being dried, -On oneside of the disk 8 and discharges; the sameon the otherside. `The next disk is provided with a similar'blade which acts 'in a similar manner ands'o on for the full length of the apparatus.
The granular matter to be dried may Vbe a sludge of any kindyor infact any granular matter having moisture therein which lis desired tobe removed. The matter to' be -dried is fed in through the hopper 18 and as it is passed through the opening 2fit will be scraped up by the first set 'of blades 11,
there being preferably two blades to each disk-8, though thisv structure 'is not absolutely necessary. The. two first blades pick vup and then discharge the matter vinto the next chamber between the two first disks 8. The blades in thisv chamber will pick up the 'matter and discharge it to the lnext chamberand so on until the dried material is discharged out'open'ing YIn order to dry the material as it passes through the apparatus a supply header 19 is provided, which supplies hot'air, gases,
`or other drying' mediums to ycomparatively small pipes 20 positioned in such a manner `that there willv be one pipe 2O for each of the chambers or spaces between the disks 8 as indicated in Figure 3. A withdrawal --pipe 21 is provided for each ofthe chambers or spaces between the disks 8, said withdrawal pipes being connected to a discharge header 22. It will be noted that by this arrangement the hot gas or other drying medium `moves transversely across the casing 1 and by the time it becomes substantially saturated with moisture it has reached the discharge pipe 21. It will also be noted that a continuous fresh supply of drying air is supplied to each chamber so that there will be an ample absorption by the air of the moisture in the last chamber as well as the rst, whereby the material is discharged in a highly dried state. As the new supply of hot air is inserted into each chamber continuously the 'blades andthe disks 8 become heated so that they v,will act in addition to stirring and transporting means as heaters for heating the material on its lway to the discharge opening 3. If desired a valve 23 could be provided in header 19 for controlling the amount ofl drying'medium used in order that just a sufficient quantity maybe utilized to produce thev desired drying action.
What I claim is:
1. A drying apparatus 'of the character scribed comprising a cylindrical casing,V and described comprising a stationary casing, a plurality of revolving conveying members for conveying matter to be dried from one i end of the casing to the other, and means for admitting a drying mediuin into said casing along one sideat right angles to the conveying members, and means for removing the vapor laden drying medium from the opposite side of said casing;
' 2. A drying apparatus for sludgesand the like comprising a. stationary casing, stirring and conveying members arranged in the casing for stirring and conveying the sludge from one end of the casing to the other, and means for causing a drying medium to passl through the casing from one side to the other lat right angles fto the stirring and conveying members for removing the moisture from said sludge.
3. A drying apparatus of the character described comprising a stationary casing, a plurality of spaced disks arranged in the casing whereby chambers are provided in the casing, a conveying blade connected with each of said disks and extending from one side lof the respectivedisks to the opposite side so as to convey matter from one side of the disk to the other,.A a rotating shaftV rigidly secured to said blades and said disks for rotating thek same, said casing being provided ywith an` inlet near one .end and an Y outlet at the V'opposite end, means for direct Y "ing Va Idrying medium into'each of said lso chambers,rand means for removing the drying medium and the moisture absorbed thereby from the diametrically opposite Vside of'said casing. c d v et( A drying apparatus of the character `described Ycomprising a stationary tubular casing, a tubular conveyer arranged in the vcasing lpositioned to convey the material to be dried from one end of the casing to the other, means for rotatin said conveyer, a plurality of spaced hot air supply pipesv` arranged on one side of ythe casing adapted to discharge hot air into the casing, and a plurality of discharge pipes for withdrawing the moisture laden air from the casing, said ldischarge pipes being substantially diavmetrically opposite to the inlet pipes.y
5. A drying cylinder of the character ldevfor rotating the'same, veach of said .disks having a pairof oppositely positioned openlings therein,V a conveyer blade arranged in eachV of said openingsformed with a discharge end and with a scraping end vadapted to scrape against the casingas :the disks rotate, said blades extending through saidk openings so as to scrape up material from said casing on one side of the respective disks and discharging the saine on the opposite side, means for directing a drying 'Y medium between each of theY respective disks,'said means being arranged on one side of the casing, and means for discharg- .ing themoisture laden air from-the opposite side of said casing, said means openinginto the space betweenthe respective disks.
6. A drying apparatus; comprising a `casing, conveying means in the casing for conveying theniaterial through .the casing-and` means for causingfardrying medium to pass through the casing at -different pointsin the length thereof and at right angles tothe conveying means. Y
