Abstract

561,189. Piston and stuffing - box packing. HALL & HALL, Ltd., and DRYSDALE, A. Nov. 2, 1942, No. 15389. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] In a piston or stuffing-box packing comprising a U section female member 4 expanded by a male member 7, of metal, rubber &c. pressed axially by fluid pressure, guide means 3 are arranged medially of the female member. The guide may comprise the flange 3 of a T section member 1 engaging a slot in the member 7 and slotted at 11 for passage of pressure fluid. Alternatively the flange may be secured to the member 7 and engage a slot in member 1, or may be replaced by annularly arranged pillars 19, Fig. 9, secured to rigid members 1, 18. A spring may be positioned beneath the foot of the flange 3. According to the Provisional Specification the male member may be in two parts and axial holes may be provided in the flange 3 for the passage of pressure fluid.
