Abstract

.560,734. Oil engines. MIRRLEES, BICKERTON, & DAY, Ltd., and JACKSON, P. Jan. 6, 1943, No. 230. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] To assist or enhance the rotary motion of a charge, an auxiliary jet of air, at a pressure equal to or greater than that of the main charge, is directed past a valve 10, tangentially on to the charge which has already been given a rotary motion through entering the combustion chamber from an inclined passage 6 terminating in an offset port. The main and auxiliary air streams may be. supplied from a single reservoir 7 or the latter may have an independent supply such as a reservoir charged by the piston during the compression stroke. Whirling may be assisted by a baffle on the main air valve 4 or a lip 17 near the outlet of the passage 6 and by directing the injected fuel along the path of the whirling air, the combustion chamber being of cylindrical or ellipsoidal or other form which will not check whirling, e.g. the top of the piston may have a part-spherical recess with or without a central projection and the cylinder head be formed correspondingly. The auxiliary jet may function throughout the induction stroke, at the beginning and end thereof only or at the end of that stroke and the commencement of the compression stroke. The injectors direct the fuel across the main inlet and the exhaust valve. The axis of the combustion chamber 31, Fig. 7, lies across the cylinder and the auxiliary air valve 35 directs air between the main air valve 33 and the exhaust valve 34. The piston may have a projection 37 adapted to enter the combustion chamber.
