Abstract

147,730. Junkers, H. Dec. 23, 1916, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-To facilitate thorough mixing of the charge in oil-engines, having oppositely-moving pistons or otherwise, air for scavenging and the formation of the charge is admitted through tangentially-arranged terminal ports 2, and the fuel enters through one or more spraying-nozzles located either in the air inlet ports, midway between the pistons or at a point nearer to the inlet ports than to the exhaust outlets 7. The ports 2, 7 communicate with chambers 3, 8 respectively. When the fuel injection nozzles are located in the wall of the cylinder, the fuel jet is directed (1) along a line which intersects the axis of the cylinder at rightangles, (2) towards either piston head, or (3) tangentially to the whirling air charge. When located in the air-inlet ports, the spraying-nozzles direct the fuel along the tangential path followed by the air current. The supply of fuel may terminate before or after the end of the compression .stroke.
